What do diff breathers do?
A differential / axle breather serves the important purpose on a 4WD vehicle of venting the air pressure in your drivetrain assemblies such as differentials, gearbox and transfer case.
What happens if you get water in your diff?
If it has water in it it goes like a milkshake, grey and bubbly it is pretty obvious. Also the level will be too high (maybe) and it will run out when you open the bung. Just change it anyway if you are worried.
How do you size a gearbox breather?
Breather size is always determined by the maximum fluid movement in/out of the fluid reservoir. Not all equipment, for example gearboxes, may specify a CFM value. If needed you can use this rule of thumb o calculate the CFM and select the correct breather for the application: 7.5 GPM = 1 CFM.
What is silica gel breather?
The purpose of these silica gel breathers is to absorb the moisture in the air sucked in by the transformer during the breathing process. Silica gel breathers are filled with Blue Silica gel (Indicating Type) which has the moisture absorption capacity and signals the saturation degree by changing its color.
Can you drive with a leaky rear differential?
Depending on the amount of oil seeping through the gasket, this may leave noticeable traces of oil on the undersides of the differential housing. A seeping differential will usually be okay to drive for a while, however, it will eventually progress into a full on leak as time goes on.
Do all gearboxes need breathers?
Breathers are an important function of any gearbox. They allow heat to escape and cooling air to enter the system, preventing unnecessary overheating issues.
Why does oil come out of a gearbox breather?
Some air-breather filters made of paper elements are intended to catch particles in the air while others with a dry desiccant remove moisture. If the filter becomes clogged and loses the ability to pass air, the gearbox will breathe through the labyrinth seals and expel oil along the way.
Do gearboxes need breathers?
Why do we use oil in breathers?
Working Principle of Silica Gel Breather The oil in the oil sealing cup acts as barrier between silica gel crystal and air when there is no flow of air through silica gel breather.
