Is pyrography the same as wood burning?
The word “pyrography” basically means writing with fire. Many people refer to pyrography as “woodburning,” however woodburning is technically done on wood, whereas pyrography can be done on any receptive surface (including wood).
Do you stain before or after wood burning?
Yes, you can and should stain wood after burning. It is best to stain wood after burning is complete for health and safety reasons. If you try to stain before burning, you would be putting yourself in harm’s way because burning stained wood causes a release of harmful gases into the air.
Should I wear a mask for pyrography?
We recommend a mask that has a carbon filter, to protect your lungs from damaging fumes, which can cause problems over time with longer exposure to wood smoke. Two masks that we use are the RZ Mask and the half-respirator.
How do you seal wood for food safe?
Applying a food-safe finish to unfinished wood tables or kitchenware is a simple process.
- Sand the item with 320-grit sandpaper until smooth.
- When using an oil finish, apply a generous amount to a cloth.
- Apply wax with a cloth until the surface is covered.
- Allow newly finished pieces to dry and cure fully.
Do you sand after pyrography?
You should have the surface finish-sanded before starting the pyrography, but if needed you can sand further after the burning is complete (using the same grit you used last, or even a bit finer). Then you’re finished sanding.
What is an important safety tip when you are doing pyrography?
Keep your burner away from flammable stuff Or accidentally set your paper pyrography patterns or burning plans too close to your burner. Or melt things you didn’t realize were too close.
What each wood burning tip is used for?
Many people use the all-purpose (universal) tip (A) for burning the outline of designs and for creating straight lines. The calligraphy tip (B) is good for curved lines and for natural writing. The extra fine tip (C) is typically used for detailed work, straight lines, and creating tighter curves.

Can I stain wood and make it food safe?
Wood stain is toxic during the application and drying processes, but is non-toxic after curing for 30 days. Most wood stains are not tested for food safety, and therefore cannot be labeled food safe, but are manufactured to comply with FDA regulations for food safety.
Does burnt wood need to be sealed?
Though the resiliency of charred timber is greater than untreated wood, it is still advisable to seal any wood that will be used outdoors. Sealing the wood adds an extra level of protection against the elements, preventing cracks, peels, and chipping.
Do I need to wear a mask when doing pyrography?
Always wear a mask with a rating of P-95 or preferably higher. Suggestions: RZMask M2 for super comfort and safety. There are many different options though, do some research and make sure the rating is high enough for smoke! Check wood toxicity of the wood you will be using prior to burning a new piece.
