What kind of fabric is water-resistant?

Polyurethane Laminate is the fabric of all fabrics that are waterproof in its own right. PUL is a polyester fabric that has a plastic backing comprising a thin waterproof layer. Polyurethane Laminate is a completely waterproof fabric, as well as being breathable and flexible.

Waterproof fabrics are most commonly composed of two or three layers including:

  • An outer layer called the “face fabric” – most commonly nylon or polyester.
  • A coated or laminated membrane – usually made with Teflon (ePTFE) or Polyurethane (PU).
  • A tri-coat mesh – bonded to the inner service to create a 3-layer fabric.

Unlike oil-based polyester which repels water, the cellulose-based viscose encourages water to seep into these nanopores so wetting the inside of the fibre itself.
