How do I hike the Witches Castle in Portland?
There’s two ways to reach the Witch’s Castle:
- Park in the Upper Macleay parking lot near the Audubon Society and head downhill for half a mile, following the markers that lead to the Stone House.
- Park in the Lower Macleay parking lot and NW 30th/Upshur and take a 3/4 mile walk to the Witch’s Castle.
Is Pittock Mansion hike open?

The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. PARTIAL CLOSURE: Portions of the Wildwood Trail near Pittock Mansion, Upper Macleay, and from Koenig to Ceator trail intersections is temporarily inaccessible, but you can still enjoy part of this trail.
Where can I park for Lower Macleay Trail?
Hikers can find several parking areas for the Wildwood Trail along Northwest Cornell Road near the Portland Audubon Sanctuary. There are several more trailheads along nearby Northwest 53rd Drive, which give access to side trails that eventually connect to the Wildwood Trail.
Why is it called witches castle?
It was mostly forgotten until the 1980s, when local high school students found it was a fun place to hold parties. The students named it “the Witch’s Castle” (despite no connection to witches) and made a tradition of holding gatherings on Friday nights, something that still happens today.
