What is StarBoard material made of?
StarBoard is a type of HDPE plastic with applications in virtually every part of a typical boat. Dockside, StarBoard is often used in the fabrication of dock boxes and steps. When stepping onto the vessel, handles and grab rails may also be made from StarBoard.

What is the difference between starboard and PVC board?
PVC will not stand up to sunlight over time like Starboard will, and PVC is also a softer material than Starboard. Both materials can be cut and shaped with woodworking tools. PVC is a great backer for uhpolstered panels, but I would use Starboard for anyplace where you will see it.
Why is it called StarBoard?
Most sailors were right handed, so the steering oar was placed over or through the right side of the stern . Sailors began calling the right side the steering side, which soon became “starboard” by combining two Old English words: stéor (meaning “steer”) and bord (meaning “the side of a boat”).
What is the difference between starboard and HDPE?
King Starboard is HDPE. It is a brand name and has a nice finish, UV inhibitors etc. There are many other brands, grades and non marine specific variants available. Depending on what you are using it for, the non King Starboard material may be fine.

The edge of StarBoard can be sanded with an orbital sander or hand sander to help smooth out a jagged edge. We DO NOT recommend sanding the surface of StarBoard! Finishing the edges of StarBoard with a router is easy and can be achieved by using a standard roundover bit.
