Do fabric coasters work?
Fabric drink coasters are a great project for beginner sewists. You get to sew with different seam allowances and have multiple opportunities to use most of the 8 basic sewing skills. If you’re new to working with rotary cutting tools, you’ll have the opportunity to practice this skill, too.
How do you make fabric coasters waterproof?
One way to seal them is to use an acrylic sealer spray from Mod Podge. You can buy this in gloss or matte. I only had matte on hand but I do think gloss is the way to go here.
What do you seal coasters with?
Varnish. Varnish is an excellent material for making coasters waterproof because of its chemistry. It contains a high ratio of solids compared to other finishing solutions. You can use spar varnish to protect wood and other materials, and it’s perfect for waterproofing.
What material can I use to make coasters?
Magazines. Use cardboard, cork, or any other material as a base and then add Mod Podge over old magazines to create cool coasters. Newspapers, mailers, comic books, and old calendars also work great!
How do you waterproof homemade coasters?
Apply Spray Sealer Apply 2 coats of a clear spray sealer to the coasters to seal and waterproof them. Make sure to do this in a well ventilated area. Spray the top, sides, and bottom side. Let the sealer dry for 20 minutes or so.
How many coats of Mod Podge do you need for coasters?

You’re going to want to coat the image and coaster with at least three coats of Mod Podge, allowing it to dry for 15 minutes (or until clear) between coats. Once the final coat has dried, spray all of the coasters with a clear acrylic gloss spray, which ensures that they’re waterproof/drink proof.

What is the best material to use for coasters?
Coasters made of porous stones like sandstone and ceramic are the most water-absorbent options. Neoprene is also an excellent absorbent material that can dry quickly.
