How wide should drawer slides be?
Drawer boxes for side-mount slides should be 1” – 1-1/16” narrower than the opening. The larger dimension will give you a little room to adjust the slides if necessary. Drawer boxes for under-mount slides need to be 3/16” – 5/16” narrower than the opening, depending on the thickness of the drawer material.
How wide are drawer glides?
The rule of thumb is 1.5 times the length of the drawer slide. If you have a standard depth kitchen cabinet then the normal length of drawer slide is 22”. If you multiply 22” x 1.5 = 33”. You can go wider, but the wider you go the more chance that the slide will not pull out as smoothly as you hope or expect.
How much of a gap does a drawer slide need?
around a ½”
Required clearance is typically around a ½” between the drawer slides and the sides of the cabinet opening and generally the only downside to a side-mount drawer slide is that they will limit the horizontal width of your drawer.
Are 36 drawers too wide?
A deep, wide drawer does have a limit in size. You just can’t do a wide drawer at 36” wide or more, because it will sag over time, even with heavy duty glides. Homeowners might tend to weigh down that drawer with big, heavy items and you have to account for that happening somewhat.
What size drawer pulls do I need?
Determine Size While there is no set rule, we generally recommend that the pull length is approximately 1/3 of the cabinet or drawer width. Small Drawers that are 12” or less typically work best with a pull that is 3” to 4” long or a knob that is 1” in diameter.
Do drawer slides have to be the same length as the drawer?
Typically, side-mount ball-bearing slides should be the same length as the drawer box. For undermount slides, be sure to check the spec sheet—drawer boxes for these slides must be built to specific depths (front to back) in order to work properly.
How much smaller should a drawer be than the opening?
Drawers can be built almost any width for bottom mount, but the most common size is 3/4-inch smaller on both sides than the cabinet opening. For example, if the opening is 12 inches wide, the drawer should be built 10 1/2 inches wide.
What is the difference between bottom mount and side mount drawer slides?
Side mounts are connected on the side of the drawer and cabinet. Bottom mounts are attached to the bottom of the drawer and side of the cabinet. Meanwhile, undermounts are two slides attached to the underneath (invisible) of the drawer and side of the cabinet.
What is better side mount or bottom mount drawer slides?
Side mounts stick out on drawers and interrupt the flow. When you open and close a drawer with undermount glides, you can feel the quality. Even though side mount glides are quiet and smooth when they open, undermount drawer glides take it to a new level.
Should all drawer pulls be the same size?
There is no right or wrong size to choose, but we do recommend choosing pulls that have at least a 3-3/4″ center to center (the distance between the screw holes). This size looks pleasing on most cabinets, while still being large enough to grip comfortably. 5″ pulls are also an excellent choice.
How do I make my drawers smaller?
downsizing your drawers (nope, this is not a dieting post)
- Set the guide to cut the drawer to the size you want.
- Make sure there are no screws where you are going to cut. **If there are any screws in the way, move them!
- Start cutting. Cut each side, then rotate the drawer and cut another side.
- Voila’.
Can you put runners on old drawers?
Older dressers typically used wooden runners that wear out because of constant use over the years, but that’s no reason to give up on that old dresser — it’s probably built better than a new one. This type of runner is basic and not that difficult to make, repair and install.
What size pulls for large drawers?
Small Drawers that are 12” or less typically work best with a pull that is 3” to 4” long or a knob that is 1” in diameter. Large Drawers that are 30” to 48″will require a pull that is longer than 8″ or a knob that is 1″ in diameter or greater. Using two pulls or knobs for a large drawer also works great.
