What are wire strainers?
The Waratah Wizard® Wire Strainer can be used to strain wire, join wire and, also used in conjunction with the Wedgelock® clamp for straining prefabricated wire. The Wizard Wire Strainer successfully tensions plain, high tensile and barbed wire with its unique grip without damaging the wire.
What are strainers in fencing?

How do you use Wedgelocks?
Steps to Operate the Wedgelock clamp
- Stand the Wedgelock clamp and the attached wire upright.
- Wrap the two chains from the Wizard wire strainers around your strainer post.
- Your fence should now look like this (image) with the strainer post supporting the chains and the Wizard’s supporting the Wedgelock.
How do you use Strainrite wire strainer?
Operation & Installation Before tying off wire to post, thread end through both the hole in the spool plus the hole on the strap bend. Tie off wire to post, leaving enough slack in wire to achieve at least two wire wraps around spool before full tension is achieved. Wire is rapidly wound in from both directions.
How do you strain a Waratah fence?
Strain the wire Attach the wire to be used in the fence to one strainer assembly, then using a Wizard® wire strainer and/or Wedgelock clamp (for pre-facbricated wire), strain the wire at the other strainer assembly. Check tension with a Tenser Senser®. Over tension slightly as you’ll lose some tension when tying off.
How far apart should strainer posts be?
Work out the exact line of the fence and the positions of the straining posts. These are usually determined by the lie of the land (a post at every change of direction or major change of gradient), but straining posts can be up to 110m apart, although 50m is preferable.
How deep should a strainer post be?
A good length for a strainer post is seven feet with three feet in the ground, but an extra six inches of depth can be allowed for corner-posts and gate-posts.

How do I attach chicken wire to Waratahs?
A. Use a Gripple® T Clip
- Ideal for use on pre-fabricated fencing and plain wire.
- Recommended for use on round posts.
- The T-Clip can be used at either end of the fence line to tie-off wire.
- Wrap your wire around a strainer post, pull the wire through the Gripple.
- Clip and pull tight around the post.
How do you pull a tight wire?
Loosen wire from the posts where the wire needs tightening. Attach fence tighteners and twist them with a pair of pliers to pull the wire tight again. Reattach the wire to the posts. For new fences, you need to use a fence stretcher tool or a come-along tool to tighten the new wire before you attach it to the posts.
