How much space do you need between flexplate and converter?
You should observe 1/8” (. 125”) to 3/16” (. 187”) of air gap between the torque converter mounting pads and flexplate before sliding the converter forward to attach it to the flexplate. If you have 1/8” – 3/16” air gap then you may proceed with sliding the torque converter forward and attaching it to the flexplate.
Can you turn flexplate by hand?
And yes you can turn the flywheel/flexplate by turning the crank bolt. That will work fine to move the flywheel/flexplate to get it started, but it’s easier to turn it at the flywheel/flexplate with screwdriver/pry bar when you are removing the bolts.
What happens if you turn a motor backwards?
When turning an engine in reverse, the only things it can damage are the oil pump and possibly the water pump. You’d have to do it QUITE a bit though, four revolutions shouldn’t hurt it.

A good flexplate does not wobble. A warped flexplate wobbles around the outside ring teeth, even if the warp is slight.
Which way does flywheel turn?
Most engines spin clockwise when you are facing the front of the vehicle. That means if you are sitting in the driver’s seat, then the engine spins clockwise. However, some older vehicles spun in the opposite direction (counterclockwise), but they were few and far between.
